In the later stage of World War II, the United States Marine Corps developed the P-44 HBT utility uniform as the improved successor to the long-serving P-41 HBT set. Compared to the traditional three-pocket layout of the P-41, the P-44 eliminated the lower hem pockets—which were prone to tearing during movement—and introduced two large concealed inside-chest pockets for better functionality and easier access in the field. The original open-style left chest pocket also received an added flap, effectively preventing items from falling out during combat or intensive activity.
Compared to the more common USMC brass buttons, this jacket features late-war “Economy steel buttons” introduced to conserve strategic metal resources. These steel buttons have a more utilitarian, industrial grey finish, reflecting the material shortages and full wartime production demands of the era.
Because these steel-button variants were produced in smaller quantities and saw limited distribution, they are regarded in the collector market as tangible evidence of late-war manufacturing and the wartime economy-conservation policies of the period.
