As the war progressed, the U.S. military improved the HBT uniform and introduced the second-generation HBT (M42 HBT) in 1942.

To increase production efficiency and address soldiers' complaints about the design, the uniform was simplified.

The new jacket eliminated the bi-swing back, adjustable waist belt, and underarm gussets. The chest pockets were made larger and simpler, and the chest width was increased by 2 inches to allow it to be worn over a standard wool shirt.
